As summer approaches, a serious warning has been issued for those considering a refreshing swim at Drakesbrook Weir. The Shire of Waroona has alerted the public to the discovery of harmful bacteria in the water, making it crucial for swimmers and holiday revelers to exercise caution.
Recent water testing conducted by the shire has revealed concerning levels of E. coli, enterococci, and thermophilic amoebae, prompting officials to strongly advise against any contact with the water. While it's important to note that the specific thermophilic amoebae found does not include Naegleria fowleri—a dangerous organism known for its potential to cause severe brain damage and which has been detected in the weir in the past—authorities are still urging the community to be extremely careful.
A spokesperson from the shire stated, "We’re advising everyone to refrain from swimming, wading, or even coming into contact with the water until we receive further test results. This is a precautionary measure for the short term, and we promise to keep you updated regularly."
Supporting this warning, a representative from WA Health emphasized the local government's role in managing this situation and reiterated the importance of avoiding the area. They mentioned, "The Department continually offers advice and support to essential agencies such as the Department of Water Environmental Regulation, Water Corporation, and Local Government to address any public health risks associated with natural water bodies."
