While it can be found in wild frogs and synthesized in laboratories, it's crucial to note that dart frogs in captivity do not produce this toxin, nor is it naturally found in Russia. While epibatidine has been explored for its potential as a painkiller and for treating inflammatory lung conditions, its severe toxicity has prevented its clinical use. And this is the part most people miss: the very properties that make it dangerous also make it a potential weapon. When administered, epibatidine overstimulates nicotinic receptors in the nervous system. Professor Alastair Hay of the University of Leeds explained that this can lead to a cascade of effects, including muscle twitching, paralysis, seizures, a slowed heart rate, respiratory failure, and ultimately, death by suffocation. He further noted that the toxin's effects can be amplified by combining it with other drugs, a fact that has been a subject of research.
The rarity of epibatidine is another significant factor. Johnson emphasized that it's found in only one specific geographic region and in minuscule amounts. The frogs themselves produce this chemical by consuming particular foods that contain alkaloids, which are then converted into epibatidine and stored in their skin. Changes in their diet can deplete these reserves. "Finding a wild frog in the right place, eating exactly the food needed to produce the right alkaloids, is almost impossible... almost," Johnson stated, underscoring the difficulty of obtaining it naturally. The few known cases of epibatidine poisoning have been laboratory-related and not fatal.
What has Russia said about these claims? European laboratories have reportedly confirmed that Navalny died from this obscure poison. Moscow has previously maintained that Navalny died of natural causes, a claim his widow, Yulia Navalnaya, has consistently refuted, asserting he was murdered. The Russian embassy in London has issued strong denials, calling the accusations "feeble-mindedness of Western fabulists" and "necro-propaganda." Kremlin spokesperson Maria Zakharova was quoted by Tass as saying these statements are part of an "information campaign" to divert attention from Western issues.
