Naomi Osaka has recently shared an update regarding her physical condition as she gears up for the upcoming Australian Open. After a challenging conclusion to the 2025 tennis season, where she faced significant struggles, Osaka has made remarkable progress in her rankings. She elevated her position from being outside the top 60 to finishing the year ranked as the world number 16.
However, this upward trajectory was punctuated by an unfortunate setback when she had to withdraw from her quarterfinal match at the Japan Open due to a knee injury. This abrupt ending to her season left fans and followers concerned about her fitness as she prepares to compete for the Australian Open title in 2026.
As the new tennis season approaches, Osaka has arrived in Perth, where she has been asked about her readiness for the upcoming tournaments. "This is definitely one of my favorite times of the year; starting here is going to be so much fun! It’s been a while since I’ve been in Perth, so it’s great to be back," she expressed enthusiastically during a media engagement at the airport.
After her difficulties in the latter part of the previous season, many are curious about how she feels physically moving into the next year. Responding to these inquiries, Osaka provided an optimistic update. "I hope I’m ready for the United Cup! I’ll know more after my first few matches, but I believe I am getting stronger each year," she stated. This comment reflects her resilience and determination to improve with each season.
Osaka is set to make her debut at the United Cup in 2026, where she will represent Japan in this mixed team competition for the very first time. When discussing her feelings about participating in this event, she compared it to the Billie Jean King Cup. "I haven’t played in the United Cup before, but I plan to approach it similarly to how I would treat the Billie Jean King Cup," she explained.
When asked about her goals for the United Cup ahead of the Australian Open, Osaka replied candidly, "Honestly, I just want to play against some strong opponents and gain valuable match experience. Watching the United Cup in the past, I’ve always admired the high-quality matches, and I’m thrilled to finally be a part of it."
In her first match of the 2026 season, Osaka will face off against former world number three Maria Sakkari in Perth, followed by a match against Emma Raducanu, the 2021 US Open champion. Leading Japan’s team alongside ATP player Shintaro Mochizuki, their first tie is scheduled for January 2.
