Rutgers Athletics Faces Record Deficit: New AD Keli Zinn's Mission to Turn Things Around
Rutgers University's athletics program is grappling with a staggering financial crisis, as revealed by its latest financial report. The report indicates a record deficit of $78 million for the 2024-2025 academic year, marking the third time in five years that the deficit has surpassed $70 million. This alarming trend has sparked concern among stakeholders and fans alike.
Keli Zinn, the newly appointed athletics director, inherited a challenging situation. She quickly immersed herself in the program's financial intricacies, stating, 'Regardless of how we look at it, we need to improve.' Zinn's initial assessment highlights the urgency of the situation.
The financial report, obtained through an Open Public Records Act request, reveals a complex financial landscape. Total operating revenues amounted to $146.6 million, primarily from the Big Ten's media rights ($61.3 million) and Football Bowl revenue fund ($10.7 million). However, an 8.7% increase in sports spending from the previous year contributed to a $47.2 million shortfall.
To bridge this gap, the university's general budget ($7 million), state budget ($8 million), and student fees ($15.8 million) were utilized, pushing the total deficit to a staggering $78 million. Since joining the Big Ten in 2014-2015, Rutgers athletics has accumulated a deficit of $516.9 million.
Zinn acknowledges the revenue challenge, emphasizing the need to address the significant gap between expenses and income. She has dedicated her first six months to improving playing surfaces and increasing funding for Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) opportunities to attract top athletes.
Despite these efforts, the report excludes a $20.5 million NIL expenditure, which the department will incur in the 2025-2026 campaign. Zinn predicts that the current fiscal year will be the most challenging in terms of profit and loss, but she remains optimistic about future improvements.
Zinn's focus extends to enhancing fundraising efforts, a critical aspect of the program's sustainability. She aims to boost contributions, which decreased from $8.5 million to $8.1 million in 2024-2025, and align with the Big Ten's average contributions of $39.2 million in FY2024.
Additionally, Zinn plans to explore premium seating options for SHI Stadium and Jersey Mike's Arena, recognizing the potential for significant revenue growth. She believes that addressing the absence of such infrastructure in the past could have mitigated the current financial challenges.
As the program navigates this crisis, Zinn's leadership and strategic initiatives will be pivotal in restoring financial stability and ensuring a brighter future for Rutgers athletics.
